State Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Our intrepid team traveled to Athens on Friday, March 7 in anticipation of their match against Chamblee Middle School on March 8.  Special thanks to Mrs. Frazier, Mrs. Stokes and the MMS cheerleaders for the rousing send off from the bus ramp.  The girls enjoyed their evening in Athens, eating at The Grill downtown and enjoying cookies from Imsomnia.  Swimming in the hotel's indoor pool was also a highlight for the team.  The state bowl was held on Saturday, March 8 at the Georgia Center at the University of Georgia.  Two rounds of fifteen questions determined the winner of the state title.  MMS fought hard, but in the end Chamblee claimed victory with a score of 170-130.  The competition was great and it was a wonderful experience for both the students and coaches. 

Division II Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

On Saturday, February 22 our girls participated in the Division II Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl held at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. Our team performed admirably earning the first place finish required to move to the state competition! Scores are normally very close at this event but MMS was able to beat the second place finishers, St. Mary’s Middle of Camden County, by fifty points! The team looks forward to competing at the state Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl which will be held at the Georgia Center at the University of Georgia in Athens on Saturday, March 8. Only two teams from each level (District I and District II) progress to state. MMS will compete against Chamblee Middle School of DeKalb County.

Southern Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Eleven middle school teams came together to compete in the Southern Regional Bowl at Valdosta State University on Saturday, February 1. MMS was able to win first place after some VERY tough competition. Because of the large amount of teams participating, MMS was only able to compete against 5 other teams which included Coastal Middle (Chatham Co.), Camden Middle (Camden Co.), Thomas County Middle, Valdosta Middle, and LFMS (Liberty Co.). Only one question separated first, second (St. Mary’s Middle-Camden Co.), and third places (LFMS). Wish our girls luck as we move on to the Division II Bowl at Georgia Southern University on January 22.

Liberty County Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

On Friday, January 17 MMS participated in the 8th Annual Liberty County Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. Each school level (elementary, middle, and high) competed against all other same-level schools in the district. Midway Middle vied for the middle school title and trophy against Lewis Frazier and Snelson-Golden middle schools. LFMS came in first with MMS a very close second. The first and second place competitors gained entry into the next level of competition.

Dr. Annette Laing: Author Visit

Author and historian Dr. Annette Laing visited MMS on Thursday, January 9 to speak to students about writing historical fiction.  Thirty-four students chosen by their ELA teachers participated in the talk held in the Reception Room.  Dr. Laing is a British native with a PhD in early American and British history from the University of California.  She is a former Georgia Southern University professor who has recently moved to Decatur.  Dr. Laing travels to schools, libraries, and conferences across the neighboring states to bring history alive for students.  Her interactive programs center around colonial, Industrial Revolution, and World War II history performed in a way that entertains, educates, and excites children.  Dr. Laing is the author of The Snipesville Chronicles, a series of historical fiction books for children in which the three main characters travel back in time.  Check them out in our Media Center!
