On October 27, Dr. Annette Laing presented her World War II lesson to the entire sixth grade at MMS! Students were able to view and handle authentic World War II artifacts and even play a World War II era game.

Open Mind Portraits

On October 18 and 19, Ms. Rohlfing's 7th grade ELA students came to the Media Center to produce Open Mind portraits. Students chose a character from the Mark Twain short story "A Californian's Tale". They then drew an outline of their characters head on white drawing paper. They cut the head out and drew the features of their character on the front. On the back they drew small pictures representing their character's development through the story as well as any objects of importance to the character and quotes. Upon completing the portrait, students wrote a paragraph explaining what the pictures on the back of their Open Mind portrait meant and why they were chosen. The portraits will be graded using a rubric given to students at the start of the project.

1st 9 Weeks AR/First in Math Incentive Party

The top 25 First in Math students and all students making their 85% average goal and individualized point goal were invited to the incentive party on Thursday, October 13 in the gym. Students enjoyed the giant slide and moonbounce. Our 3-7 Cav soldiers showed their support for the event by donating their time to interact with our students. Everyone had a great time, yay Math and Reading!

SS6G9: Chernobyl

Mrs. Probst's 6th grade social studies classes spent the last three days in the Media Center researching the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. Students viewed two YouTube videos about the event for background. They then used a Media Center pathfinder and books to research the event. After finding out what happened, why, and the effects on Europe, the students began work on their RAFT's. (Role, Audience, Format, Topic). Students could choose a role (survivor, news reporter, or environmentalist). Their format and audience depended on that role. It could be a letter to a friend or family member, a news report, or an environmental public statement. Many of the finished products were very moving!
