Local Author Visit

Local author D.M. Paul took some time on Monday, November 5 to visit with MMS students in the Media Center. Paul, a Pooler resident, stopped by to talk to forty-three students picked by their ELA teachers. Topics of discussion included Paul’s One Wizard Place series, the writing process, the publishing world and personal interests like favorite authors and movies. Paul also discussed his book Between, which he is currently writing a screenplay for . The book has been optioned by the same studio that produced Coraline. Students prepared for the visit by reading his books and writing questions they wanted to ask him. Our students asked great questions and gained a lot of insight into the writing and publishing worlds from Paul.

Major Religions of Europe PhotoStory Project

On September 20, 21, and 24 Mrs. Probst's sixth grade Social Studies classes came to the Media Center to work on projects researching the three major religions of Europe. Students were taught how to search NetTrekker for images, how to cite images and information, and how to create a PhotoStory. Parents were invited to view the process and work with their student.

Georgia Studies Resources

From August 30-September 5 each 8th grade Georgia Studies class came in for a lesson on web resources in GALILEO.  Students were provided with a handout of the sites.  Each site was demonstrated so students could see what type of resources they contained, how they could be searched and navigated, and how they would be relevant to their studies this year.  After the demonstration students were given time on the netbooks to explore the sites on their own.

Accelerated Reader Presentations

Each team returned to the Media Center from August 22-28 to view a presentation about our AR program.  Information about the theme (Camp Read-A-Lot) start date (September 4), STAR testing, incentives, and purpose of the program were all discussed.  Students asked questions to clarify and learn about the different facets presented.  The website ARBookFinder (www.arbookfind.com) was demonstrated so that students can find out if books from home or books checked out from the public library are AR.  The book level and point level search features of Destiny were also demonstrated.  After the presentation students were allowed to check out new books.

SMARTBoard Training

SMARTBoard training was held in Room 417 from 3:45-4:15 on Tuesday, August 21.  Seventeen participants showed up and were presented with basic SMARTBoard information.  Topics covered included orienting the board, features of the SMARTNotebook software, and ideas for implementing the technology into the classroom.  Fruit and candy sushi was served for an afternoon snack.  :)

Media Center Orientations

The Media Center has been busy this month with orientations.  Each ELA teacher is bringing (or has brought) their classes in for a basic introduction to our Media Center rules and procedures.  Students viewed a ten minute video put together by students last year.  The video highlights salient points in short skits and songs written by the students and filmed on an iPad.  After the video each student received their Media Center ID card and was allowed to check out.

43rd Annual Children's Literature Conference

Mrs. Dover attended the annual conference in Athens on March 23rd and 24th. Authors including Jody Feldman (Gollywhopper Games) and Barbara O'Connor (Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester, Greetings From Nowhere) gave keynote speeches and autographed books. Sessions on integrating literature and technology were offered as well.

Division II Bowl

Our team did a great job at the Division II Bowl held at Southeast Bulloch High School in Brooklet on Saturday, February 25. The scores were incredibly close with a tie for first and second. The winner of the tie breaker, Hilsman Middle will represent our division at the state bowl on March 24. Camden County, who along with Hilsman scored 280 points, took second place. Third went to Clarke Middle with 260 points. Our own MMS team scored 240 points placing fourth. We are incredibly proud of our team!

HRRB Places 2nd at Southern Regional Bowl

On Saturday, February 4, our MMS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team came in 2nd place at the Southern Regional Bowl held at Valdosta State University. Camden Middle School placed 1st and Lewis Frazier Middle School came in 3rd. This 2nd place win enables our team to progress to the Division B bowl to be held at Southeast Bulloch High School in Brooklet on Saturday, February 25.

First Place win for MMS HRRB!

Our Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team placed first in the Liberty County Bowl on January 20 beating out LFMS, SGMS, and First Presbyterian. MMS and LFMS will represent Liberty County in the Southern Regional Bowl in Valdosta on Saturday, February 4.
