MMS held its CSI (Curriculum Scene Investigation): Midway event on Thursday, September 22. The curriculum night allowed students and parents to participate in curriculum-centered activities with a forensics twist. We had a great turnout and a wonderful time!

Colonial Georgia Podcasting

Mr. Richards and Mrs. Walden's classes came in to work on standard SS8H2. The activity had students researching important colonial Georgia figures (Mary Musgrove, James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Salzburgers, Highland Scots, and everyday colonists) using Georgia resources in GALILEO. Each student wrote a two to three minute narrative in the first person using their research. The students then used Podomatic to record the narratives. On September 15, 2011 Mrs. Probst's Social Studies classes visited the Media Center for a PhotoStory lesson and to begin research and picture searching for their SS6G11 project. The students used NetTrekker to begin searching for information and pictures related to the three major religions of Europe: Judaism, Christianity, and Judaism. Parents and Grandparents were invited to come along and learn PhotoStory along with their students. We had a great turnout!

Body Biographies

Today Mrs. Golden's 6th grade ELA classes came to the MC to begin work on body biographies. Students were instructed about the importance of characters to a story and how to analyze characters. Each student chose a character from one of five stories the class had read. They then drew a full body portrait of that character. They included symbolic elements for the heart, backbone, hands, and feet to represent the things that were important to the character. They also drew a background and added quotes from the character to complete the drawing. On their next visit, the students will construct a narrative to explain why those chose to represent the various elements the way they did.

S7L1 PowerPoint/PhotoStory lesson

Today Ms. Croon (Pickard)'s classes came to the Media Center to begin work on a PowerPoint or PhotoStory covering organism classification. Students were introduced to both programs and shown examples of how to create their project using these formats. Students then used NetTrekker to find pictures and information about an organism they chose. They then had time to begin working on the presentation which would show how their organism fit into the different levels of classification (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species). Students were also reminded of an earlier lesson on citing sources and began work on a works cited page for their presentation.

MLA Citations

This week several ELA classes (Knight, Broadnax, and Hardy) came to the Media Center for some hands-on lessons on MLA citations. As a group we discussed plagiarism and the importance of citing sources. Students used an interactive tutorial to look at the different citation forms for different sources. They then applied their new knowledge to writing citations for several different sources.
