November 14 author visit with D.M. Paul

On November 14, 20 gifted students were selected by Mrs. Swinson to meet author D.M. Paul in the Media Center. Many of these students are aspiring authors themselves. The students wrote questions for Mr. Paul dealing with the writing process, the publishing business, and his books. Students wrote excellent questions and received some great information! The visit was provided by the Live Oak Library system in honor of Children's Book Week and the upcoming Children's Book Festival in Savannah.

On October 27, Dr. Annette Laing presented her World War II lesson to the entire sixth grade at MMS! Students were able to view and handle authentic World War II artifacts and even play a World War II era game.

Open Mind Portraits
On October 18 and 19, Ms. Rohlfing's 7th grade ELA students came to the Media Center to produce Open Mind portraits. Students chose a character from the Mark Twain short story "A Californian's Tale". They then drew an outline of their characters head on white drawing paper. They cut the head out and drew the features of their character on the front. On the back they drew small pictures representing their character's development through the story as well as any objects of importance to the character and quotes. Upon completing the portrait, students wrote a paragraph explaining what the pictures on the back of their Open Mind portrait meant and why they were chosen. The portraits will be graded using a rubric given to students at the start of the project.

1st 9 Weeks AR/First in Math Incentive Party
The top 25 First in Math students and all students making their 85% average goal and individualized point goal were invited to the incentive party on Thursday, October 13 in the gym. Students enjoyed the giant slide and moonbounce. Our 3-7 Cav soldiers showed their support for the event by donating their time to interact with our students. Everyone had a great time, yay Math and Reading!

SS6G9: Chernobyl
Mrs. Probst's 6th grade social studies classes spent the last three days in the Media Center researching the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. Students viewed two YouTube videos about the event for background. They then used a Media Center pathfinder and books to research the event. After finding out what happened, why, and the effects on Europe, the students began work on their RAFT's. (Role, Audience, Format, Topic). Students could choose a role (survivor, news reporter, or environmentalist). Their format and audience depended on that role. It could be a letter to a friend or family member, a news report, or an environmental public statement. Many of the finished products were very moving!

CSI: Midway

MMS held its CSI (Curriculum Scene Investigation): Midway event on Thursday, September 22. The curriculum night allowed students and parents to participate in curriculum-centered activities with a forensics twist. We had a great turnout and a wonderful time!
Colonial Georgia Podcasting
Mr. Richards and Mrs. Walden's classes came in to work on standard SS8H2. The activity had students researching important colonial Georgia figures (Mary Musgrove, James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Salzburgers, Highland Scots, and everyday colonists) using Georgia resources in GALILEO. Each student wrote a two to three minute narrative in the first person using their research. The students then used Podomatic to record the narratives. On September 15, 2011 Mrs. Probst's Social Studies classes visited the Media Center for a PhotoStory lesson and to begin research and picture searching for their SS6G11 project. The students used NetTrekker to begin searching for information and pictures related to the three major religions of Europe: Judaism, Christianity, and Judaism. Parents and Grandparents were invited to come along and learn PhotoStory along with their students. We had a great turnout!

Body Biographies
Today Mrs. Golden's 6th grade ELA classes came to the MC to begin work on body biographies. Students were instructed about the importance of characters to a story and how to analyze characters. Each student chose a character from one of five stories the class had read. They then drew a full body portrait of that character. They included symbolic elements for the heart, backbone, hands, and feet to represent the things that were important to the character. They also drew a background and added quotes from the character to complete the drawing. On their next visit, the students will construct a narrative to explain why those chose to represent the various elements the way they did.

S7L1 PowerPoint/PhotoStory lesson
Today Ms. Croon (Pickard)'s classes came to the Media Center to begin work on a PowerPoint or PhotoStory covering organism classification. Students were introduced to both programs and shown examples of how to create their project using these formats. Students then used NetTrekker to find pictures and information about an organism they chose. They then had time to begin working on the presentation which would show how their organism fit into the different levels of classification (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species). Students were also reminded of an earlier lesson on citing sources and began work on a works cited page for their presentation.

MLA Citations
This week several ELA classes (Knight, Broadnax, and Hardy) came to the Media Center for some hands-on lessons on MLA citations. As a group we discussed plagiarism and the importance of citing sources. Students used an interactive tutorial to look at the different citation forms for different sources. They then applied their new knowledge to writing citations for several different sources.

PhotoStory and PowerPoint
Mr. Lawson's 7th grade Science students came to the MC today for a quick tutorial on PowerPoint and PhotoStory 3. The students will be using these tools to create a presentation about organism classification. Each student chose an organism and then used sites like NetTrekker (demonstrated by the MS) to research how that organism fits in to each of the seven levels of classification. Students were also given instruction on how to cite their sources of information and pictures.

Georgia Resources in GALILEO
The past few days have been spent exposing our 8th grade students to all of the wonderful Georgia Studies resources in GALILEO! Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Walden, Mr. Richards, and Mr. Williams brought their classes to the Media Center where they got a chance to look over databases such as Georgia Stories, the New Georgia Encyclopedia, Vanishing Georgia, and GeorgiaInfo. Each of these resources offers excellent infomation that these students can use when conducting research later in the school year.

Media Center Orientations
Today was the last day for Media Center orientations. Each ELA teacher (grades 6-8)brought their students through the MC to become acquainted with the rules, procedures, and programs offered by the Media Center. Students were then able to check out for the first time and received their Media Center ID cards.

MMS: Liberty County Exemplary Media Center
At the board meeting on Monday, May 10, Midway Middle School was awarded a plaque for the secondary level (middle/high) Liberty County Exemplary Media Program. To qualify, a media center must score exemplary in at least 14 out of 19 indicators on a state-wide rubric. Joseph Martin Elementary was awarded the elementary award. Each Media Specialist was asked to write a five page narrative explaining how their media center program meets and exceeds the rubric standards. This narrative enters the two media centers into a state-wide competition.

Children's Literature Conference- Athens, GA
On March 4-5 the Media Specialists at Midway Middle and Snelson-Golden attended the annual Children's Literature Conference in Athens. Both learned a lot and had a great time interacting with teachers, authors, and other Media Specialists.

Read Across America Week
To celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, MMS students participated in a Dr. Seuss character scavenger hunt all week. Each day different characters were hidden on the walls around the school. When students found character they brought it to the Media Center. If the student was able to correctly identify the character, they won a goody bag.

Division II Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
On Saturday, February 26, nine of our Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team members made the trip to Brooklet to participate in the Division II reading bowl. Competition was tough, but MMS came out 4th. This was the first time MMS had participated in this level of competition, and our students performed fantastically!
Media Festival
On Friday, February 25 MMS held its annual Media Festival. This is a chance for students to showcase their media production skills. Participation was not as high as hoped, but some great projects were turned in. Thank you to Ms. Kelso, Ms. Walden, Ms. Layton, and Ms. Gadson for helping to judge projects. One project will go on to the county level.
